Sleep has a big direct impact on a person Psych.
We all know that we spend 1/3 of our day and our life lying on a mattress. The latter is a critical component in our sleep quality. There are 3 sleeping positions that heavily affect our sleeping process: back, side and stomach.Depending on how our body is lying on the mattress impacts directly breathing, muscle tension, back or neck pain, bones alignment and feeling of comfort.Let’s start with back sleeping: this is one of the most popular and widespread positions alongside side sleep. It’s a relatively easy position to be satisfied by a mattress as long as it is primarily firm so it can support the back and spines alignment the whole night. The level of firmness should be adequate. Otherwise too firm will prevent the adaptation of the morphology and too soft will cause a “sink in” so the body will not have enough support.Finding the “sweet spot” is hard to achieve without actually trying many mattresses in a store before buying that tend to be on the firm spectrum if you are a back sleeper. For stomach sleepers, it’s the same logic regarding the need for a firm mattress. However, the morphology of the stomach+chest is different from the back+ neck lower back, so the level of firmness is not the same. Pillows play an important role in adjusting and correcting postures and add more flexibility to the sleeping position when the level of firmness of the pillow is compatible with the mattress firmness.Lastly, the side sleepers need a softer mattress that will allow the morphology of the side to preserve its shape. The soft feeling is great however if it doesn’t offer enough support over time, the good feeling of comfort will turn into discomfort or muscle tension not felt necessarily after waking up but during simple gestures or exercise. One can argue that our grandparents didn’t care as much about these details and and these options. My Perception of this argument is that our bodies in this day and age are “weaker” in terms of health, “softer” in general and less resistant to the hardships or even discomfort. Whool was used a lot in old mattresses before coils were invented and industrial latex/ Foam start being produced. The latter is usually what defines a soft mattress including “the bed in box”, popular in U.S.A. , and it is used in some electrical bedsprings
